La tradizione americana vuole che questo venerdì così particolare arrivi all'indomani del ,Giorno del Ringraziamento ( Thanksgiving Day) festa che negli USA si celebra il quarto giovedì di novembre. La sua origine è fatta risalire al 1621, quando nella città di Plymouth, nel Massachusetts, i padri pellegrini si riunirono per ringraziare Dio del buon raccolto. Quasi quattro secoli dopo, negli anni Sessanta, i negozianti presero l'abitudine di proporre sconti speciali per incentivare lo shopping e dare il via alle spese natalizie.
PERCHÉ NERO? La traduzione in italiano ha un significato del tutto diverso, ed ecco perché non si usa "venerdì nero", ma quanto al black è così perché all'epoca i registri contabili dei negozianti si compilavano a penna, usando inchiostro rosso per i conti in perdita e nero per i conti in attivo. E nel venerdì dopo il Ringraziamento, grazie alle promozioni, i conti finivano sempre decisamente in nero.
